A recent field trip to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum gave our Orientation Explore! students an incredible behind-the-scenes look at how museum professionals conceptualize, design and implement museum exhibits and learning opportunities. Jill Ferris, Senior Director of Engagement, Learning, & Interpretation spent the day with students broadening their view of how museum educators design experiences for learning in a museum context. , Chief Curator, Pete Lesher gave students a behind-the-scenes tour of off-exhibit museum objects and discussed how the collection, care and curation of objects contribute to the preservation and interpretation of history and human experience in our region. Students also had an opportunity to engage in a History Hunt scavenger hunt activity in historic Saint Michaels and Robert Forloney, a familiar face from our Rock Hall collaboration, joined us to help students connect the day's learning with their project at the Waterman's Museum.
We could not have asked for a better hands-on, behind-the-scenes experience for our students who gained a great deal of insight into the world of making museums!
